What is Counselling?

Some people may be embarrassed to attend therapy, believing they have failed in some way.  This is of course, just not true, recognising that you may need some help and taking action to get it, is not a weakness.  Many people, from all walks of life choose professional therapy.

Counselling can provide a regular time and space for people to talk about their troubles and explore difficult feelings, in an environment that is safe and confidential.

A counsellor will listen to and respect your viewpoint, whilst helping you to identify how you deal with problems and react to situations or people.  They can offer an alternative way of looking at things and help you to develop new strategies for moving forward.

We use Integrative Counselling at Stepping Stones East.  Individuals all think, feel and react in different ways. By using different methods of support, an integrative counsellor can work with each client to produce a unique therapy adapted to suit them, to bring about change in their lives.

Is Counselling for You?

While it can be really helpful to talk to someone you know and trust, like a friend or family member, sometimes they are just too close to the actual situation that is troubling you.

Some clients at first may feel uneasy about confiding in a counsellor, effectively a stranger, however, remember this is a trained professional who can often be more objective about your situation.  Also, setting a specific time and space to talk each week, may help you to work to confront issues that previously you have avoided.

Counselling is definitely worth considering when:

  • you are feeling anxious, overwhelmed or depressed

  • you need someone to listen to you, to help you find focus in your life

  • an issue or situation is seriously affecting your everyday life

  • you can’t make important decisions and are not sure what to do next

A counsellor can meet with you on a one-to-one basis, with you and your partner or with members of your family, to talk through issues that are concerning you.

What Issues can Counsellors Help With?

Counsellors can talk you through a whole range of issues or problems. Here are just some of the areas they are used to dealing with:

"Problems call forth our courage and our wisdom; indeed, they create
our courage and our wisdom.
It is only because of problems that we grow mentally and spiritually.
It is through the pain of confronting and
resolving problems that we learn"
